"Genocide of Israel, Palestine's blood": Pamplona's bullring once again becomes a focal point for radical slogans.

"Genocide of Israel, Palestine's blood": Pamplona's bullring once again becomes a focal point for radical slogans.

Pamplona's Monumental bullring, which this week hosts the iconic San Fermín bullfights, experienced another episode this afternoon of political slogans that have little to do with the centennial celebration. "ISRAEL GENOZIDA, GORA PALESTINAR. RESISTANCE," read a large banner placed in the middle of the stands. Around it, dozens of Palestinian flags complete the scene.

This is just the latest episode in the politicization of the festival this year, reflected in the streets and various events of Semana Grande. On July 7, the same bullring witnessed another spectacle far removed from the first bullfight of San Fermín. Whistles directed at the city's mayor, Joseba Asirón, and cries of "Pedro Sánchez, son of a bitch" were heard throughout the arena. Dozens of Palestinian flags also sprouted from various points in the stands.

The pro-Palestinian cause for this San Fermin festival has been officially promoted by the City Council, led by the Bildu party, which seems to view these festivities as a platform for political activism rather than an iconic cultural event for Spain and internationally renowned. In the official promotional video released by the council, there is no mention of a bull, a running of the bulls, or a saint.

The Chupinazo ( fireworks) that kicked off the San Fermin festival last Sunday was led by the Yala Nafarroa for Palestine platform. From the City Hall's pavilion, upon lighting the rocket, its spokespersons shouted: "Stop genocide! Free Palestine!"
